About Carmignano Mill

Located in the Veneto region of northern Italy, Carmignano Mill dates back to 1877 – so it’s no surprise that it has established a strong tradition of producing specialty papers. Between 1932 and 1982, for example, the mill produced electro-counting cards for the Central Statistical Institute. It has also made papers for transatlantic submarine cable insulation and, since 2010, has manufactured innovative papers for the food industry. In 2015, production began on dye sublimation papers for use in the textile industry and, from 2024, for the medical industry too. In the same year, the mill began producing functional and barrier paper grades for flexible packaging.

In 2019 the Digital Solutions Centre was established, researching innovations in fields such as sublimation printing and colour profiling.

The mill is also active in the developing field of micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC), with a brand-new plant producing MFC materials for the mill itself as well as for use in homecare and cosmetics products.

We actively cooperate with technical high schools and universities in the regions where our plant is located. Each year, we offer the opportunity for several students to do curricular internships and thesis projects in the company. We also set up apprenticeship programs in cooperation with Higher Technical Institutes in both the production and maintenance areas.

    Caring for the environment

In line with Sappi’s ambitious sustainability goals, Carmignano Mill runs several initiatives designed to look after its immediate environment and help promote a thriving world.

    Eco-efficient energy production

In 2022, Carmignano Mill opened a substantially more energy efficient, state-of-the-art co-generation plant. The new plant also reduces pollutants, thanks to a more efficient combustion and emission control system. Meanwhile residual heat is used to dry sludge waste, significantly reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

The new plant saves 1,000 tons of carbon emissions and 3,500 tons of landfill waste every year.

    Saving water

In accordance with our SDG 6 goals, we comprehensively redesigned our water management system.

The main goal was to save and recycle more water in our production process, while looking for opportunities to further improve the quality of the wastewater we discharge.

Major financial investment has allowed us to regulate water withdrawal, reduce freshwater supply, stabilise the production process, minimise waste and balance water use. The new system reduces peak demand and maintains a consistent dilution for each paper grade.

The project has resulted in significant water savings of 98,280 m3/year

    PV panels

In 2024, we completed the installation of about 1100 photovoltaic panels on the roof of our newly finished “Palladio”warehouse – an area of about 6500 square meters.

With these panels, we can produce 480 kWp of renewable electric energy (about 530 MWh/year) and reduce our CO₂ emission by 150 ton/year.
