The Matane Mill is the newest addition to the Sappi North America family. Located at the mouth of the Matane River in Quebec’s Gaspe Peninsula, the mill has a capacity to produce 270,000 tons per year of high-quality, high-yield bleached chemi-thermo mechanical pulp, known as BCTMP.

About Matane Mill

Bringing the Matane Mill into the Sappi family establishes certainty of supply for high-yield pulp that’s in increasing demand. Importantly, it enables us to increase supply to our mills in North America and Europe as capacity expands in growth businesses.

The high-yield pulp produced at the Matane Mill is used in a variety of everyday applications, including graphic papers, paperboard, linerboard and specialty papers. The pulp provides higher bulk, opacity and stiffness in the final product.

The Matane Mill has been producing some of the finest BCTMP for over 20 years and has an outstanding reputation for quality and uniformity. Sappi people have innovated impactful eco-efficiencies year on year that have enabled the mill to regularly break production records. All while ensuring the highest safety standards with zero lost-time injury since Sappi acquired the mill in 2019.

The Matane Mill produces high-yield bleached chemi-thermo mechanical pulp (BCTMP); aspen and maple pulp for graphic papers, paperboard linerboard and speciality papers.

95% of the energy used at the mill comes from renewable sources (hydroelectricity, biogas).
